Android C2DM with PHP and Zend Framework | Mike Willbanks.
//Hmm very interesting (from my initial understanding) for using Android push services with PHP/Zend to tickle your applications with push ‘alerts’ to notify a client that there is new data on your server (available from your Zend exposed services) thanks Mike! – very handy post!

Background to Android C2DMAndroid
Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) is a service that helps developers send data from servers to their applications on Android devices. The service provides a simple, lightweight mechanism that servers can use to tell mobile applications to contact the server directly, to fetch updated application or user data. It allows third-party application servers to send lightweight messages to their Android applications. NOTE: The messaging service is not designed for sending a lot of user content via the messages. Rather, it should be used to tell the application that there is new data on the server, so that the application can fetch it.

    Thanks for the ping back. Under my projects section there is a link to the code on github as well. I am going to be upgrading some of the libraries in terms of the gearman approach here at some point.

    C2DM is fascinating at there is so much more that a person can do with it. For instance, ping the application to fetch in the background for new data (like gmail does for sync), building in update notifications, triggering messages to the users of your applications (special offers etc – groupon does a good job with this). You could even use it to notify your users of an upgrade.

    Apples push notification service is far more limited in being capable of handling more advanced notifications such as these and triggering more events within the applications.

    @Mike
    Thanks for the heads up and sharing your insightes… Seems kinda weird getting a comment on my ‘bookmarks site’ but great all the same 🙂

    I did have a quick nose at your repro. We currently have a member of the team doing some preliminary tests using C2DM. I must say it seems a really great architecture and as you state, so many rich uses could be applied – interesting to say the least!

    FYI we have been producing some forth coming opensource work for Moodle 2.0 API (using Zend…) Would be great to see how it could all collide together for the Moodle community to use….

    I will get in touch next week to see whats what and we can swap/collide/compare explorations! Thanks again

    Can this messaging service be integrated with Adobe Air for Android?
